HOW COMMON CELLULITE IS?

Cellulite is a very common cosmetic problem that concerns the majority of women, in a rate that reaches or exceeds 90%! The appearance of cellulite is not necessarily related to whether a woman has extra weight or not. It usually appears after puberty and although causes no harm to our health, it is a cosmetic problem that affects negatively the psychology.

One of the prevalent theories about cellulite, is that cellulite appears after puberty, as a fat storage mechanism, which will support a woman’s calorie needs, during pregnancy and breastfeeding period.

Although it is one of the most common cosmetic problems, it is also one of the most easily treatable problems nowadays, due to modern technology equipment.

The treatments that are available are:

  • Mesotherapy
  • Cavitation – RF
  • Fractional Laser
  • Threads

In Derm & Plastic Surgery Clinic, we use both injectable mesotherapy and non-injectable mesotherapy with the authentic Dermapen micro needling device. The target of mesotherapy is to deliver specific substances deep into the skin, in a depth that cannot be reached, by any of the daily body creams that are being applied on the skin.

In injectable mesotherapy we use specific substances that dissolve the fat, but also tighten the skin. The use of very fine needles, such as those used in acupuncture, as well as, the application of local numbing cream before the treatment, makes this method extremely tolerable and painless.

In non-injectable mesotherapy with Dermapen, we create small microperforations (channels) into the skin at the required depth, through which the substances that we apply on the surface of the skin are getting absorbed. In most cases, after 8-10 sessions, every trace of visible cellulite has been gone, while the production of our natural collagen and elastin, which also Dermapen triggers, continues to strengthen and tighten the skin.

Mesotherapy can be easily combined with the minimally invasive CelluClip method. This method, gives us the opportunity to cut off the fibrous connections, which pull down the skin and create the cellulite dimples. This allows us, to smooth the skin in the treated area. With the CelluClip method, a special tool is inserted under the dimples and frees them up. The treatment is painless, as it is preceded by local anaesthesia and the result is immediately visible, resulting in smoother skin.

Also known as 3D Lipo, it is one of the most effective modern, non-invasive liposculpture methods, which involves the use of specific ultrasound energy directly on the fat cells. The amazing thing about this method, is the permanent destruction of the fat cells, which are then, gradually excreted through the lymphatic system. The term RF (radiofrequency) refers to radiofrequency energy, which is emitted during this treatment.

The head of this device comes in contact with the skin and transfers this energy subcutaneously, causing heat destruction of the fatty tissue and stimulation of the lymphatic system. Radiofrequency also target fibroblasts, which activate the production of collagen and elastin that gradually tightens the skin. The most common areas, of Cavitation RF application, are the thighs, buttocks, abdomen and arms (upper arm) with excellent results.

It is one of the most advanced therapies in cosmetic dermatology and the latest in laser skin rejuvenation technology. It is a painless treatment, which is perfectly tolerated by the patient, with a recovery period of up to 48 hours.

Fractional Laser therapy is the only laser treatment that offers regeneration of the skin and production of new collagen at the same time. The energy of this laser, is divided into smaller beams, which selectively scan the surface of the skin and treat directly the problematic areas.

These beams reach the deeper layers of the skin and stimulate the fibroblasts to produce natural collagen and elastin, resulting in further rejuvenation and skin tightening from within.

Threads are an innovative and modern method that reduces cellulite and tightens the skin without surgery. Threads form a supporting grid under the skin, which stimulates collagen production, stretching and lifting the skin. The treatment is painless, as it is done under local anaesthesia and the patient returns immediately after the treatment to her daily activities, without any restriction.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS

What is causing cellulite?
The reason why cellulite appears is the loss of elasticity, of the connective tissue in the dermis and the abnormal accumulation of fat and water, between the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Due to the loss of connective tissue’s elasticity, fat exerts uneven pressure, creating dimples and bumps and resulting in what we call “the orange peel skin”. Body parts in which cellulite occur, are the thighs, the buttocks, the abdomen and the arms.

Which factors affect cellulite?

Diet: “We are” what “we eat” and this is very true for cellulite. If you don’t drink plenty of water and healthy food is absent from your daily life, while saturated fat, carbohydrates, carbonated soft drinks, sugar, alcohol or salt are the majority, then your skin becomes dehydrated. This results in fluid retention and cellulite.

Genetic predisposition: If your mother has cellulite, you have a higher chance to have it also. However, the extent to which heredity influences cellulite and the extent to which the environment and lifestyle affect our genes, are still not clear.

Hormones: In every woman’s life there are periods, in which hormones fluctuate. In particular, contraceptives, pregnancy and menopause may result in cellulite, through increased fluid retention and weight gain.

Smoking: If you are a smoker, you possibly have cellulite also. Smoking affects the body in many ways and one of them is cellulite, due to poor microcirculation.

Exercise: The sedentary life associated with office work, is one of the main reasons for the appearance of cellulite. In general, lack of physical activity is an aggravating factor. Regular walking, for 30 minutes per day, reduces cellulite and aerobic exercise, prevents the appearance of cellulite, by increasing fat burning.

Lymphatic and Circulatory disorders: If you have varicose veins, spider veins or swollen feet, it is most likely that you have cellulite also. Therefore, it will be necessary, to have a vascular medical examination, prior to your cellulite treatment.

What are the stages of cellulite?

There are four evolution stages of cellulite.

Stage 0: Either on standing upright or lying down, the skin is smooth. When you squeeze the skin between your fingers, you see folding of it, but no dimples or bumps.

Stage 1: Either on standing upright or lying down, the skin is smooth. When you squeeze the skin between your fingers, then dimpling appears.

Stage 2: When you are lying down the skin is smooth, but when you stand upright, then dimpling and “orange peel skin” appear.

Stage 3: Cellulite appears both on standing and at lying position, regardless of the position and regardless, if we squeeze the skin or not.
